(WOODHULL, NY) – Another much awaited summer racing activity has fallen victim to COVID-19 and its governmental and health agency restrictions. The 2020 Woodhull Raceway Hall of Fame induction ceremony and gathering scheduled for August 29, 2020 at Woodhull Raceway has been postponed.
The restrictions on gatherings, the fact that race tracks aren't allowed spectators, the travel and quarantine rulings for visitors from other states, as well as a sincere concern for the health and wellbeing of the attendees were all factors in the decision, according to Hall of Fame spokespersons. The entire seven-person board of directors were involved in the decision, and in the end, the vote to postpone was unanimous.
"This event should have a relaxed and fun atmosphere," said board member Fred Amann. "There doesn't seem to be any way of doing that with all of the outside distractions."
Board member Tony Van Pelt echoed Amann's sentiments, adding, "By combining 20 and 21, all the fans, family, friends, and sponsors can enjoy the event without worry of the problems of today."
The event is postponed, not cancelled. 2020 inductees will receive their personal awards near the end of August, and there will be an online tribute to each of the ten inductees posted around that same time. The Hall of Fame board members and the management of Woodhull Raceway have made a commitment to include the 2020 inductees in the public 2021 induction ceremony at the track.
Further updates will be forthcoming.
The Woodhull Raceway Hall of Fame is a separate entity from the racetrack and is in its third year of operation. The ten inductees for 2020 will join 25 others who have previously been inducted. The 2020 Class of the Hall of Fame include:
JOHN BURGESS
BUD BURROWS
SKEET CRANE
CECIL DARRIN
STEVE HOUGHTALING
DOUG HOWARD
TOM KULL
PHIL MOTT JR.
HOPPY SMITH
MONROE PUFFER.
