(WOODHULL, NY) – New year, different challenger, same result. Codie Baker, just one year after winning his first track championship at his home track bested good friend and teammate Adam DelGrosso for the 2018 Bear’s Auto Body Front Wheel Drive title.
Both drivers had great seasons to their credit in a season saw the two absolutely dominate the win column. But the difference at the end of the year would be this- Baker won three out of the last five races to finish the season while DelGrosso only visited victory lane once in the last five.
Baker was also very good in the heat race win department, scoring three bonus points in eight out of fourteen points-paying races. DelGrosso in all collected five feature wins, but only seven heat race wins. Baker just didn’t leave a big margin for error in what was an incredibly entertaining battle for the points title right up to Championship Night.
Baker also found success in the Front Wheel Drive Challenge Series that he and Bear’s Auto Body put on. The Challenge Series events set new track records for Front Wheel Drive payouts and overall purse.
Finishing third in points in 2018 was Nate Freeland in the B&D Stoves, Village Café No. 26. Freeland was shut out in the wins department this season, but was consistent in securing a spot on the podium.
Ryan Austin- a true checkers or wreckers racer during the 2018 season would claim the fourth spot in the final tally. Austin took home three victories on the season, but included three finishes outside of the Top 10 being DNF’s.
Last season’s Rookie of the Year, Scott Lehman Jr., secured the final spot in the year end Top 5 tally for points. Lehman in all tallied seven Top 5’s on the year.
A shining personality in the driver pit area, Cara Pitts, won Rookie of the Year for the Front Wheel Drive contingent.
The end of the year will leave racers and fans waiting until the March 15-17 Arnot Mall Car Show in Big Flats, NY to gather together once again to bench race in preparation for the 2019 season. The season will kick off on April 6 and 13 with open practice sessions, weather permitting, before kicking off with a special event on April 20 and the complete weekly program with Big Block/Small Block Modifieds on April 27.
