(WOODHULL, NY) – Woodhull Raceway opened their gates for the first time on June 13, 1965, and hundreds of area residents have driven, owned or worked on race cars, attended, been a track official, or sponsored events at the Raceway over it's 54 year history.
The track has honored that history over the years, with a Legends of Woodhull recognition night on the schedule. This year, on August 25, the newly created Woodhull Raceway Hall of Fame, and the induction of the inaugural class of inductees will be the highlight of the activities.
The Hall of Fame is a project that is long overdue, but the committee charged with making this happen has been working diligently to create an Inaugural Class that everyone can be proud of. With hundreds of drivers, car owners, pit crew members, officials, sponsors, and loyal fans investing countless hours in the success of the Raceway over the last half century, the number of people deserving recognition is overwhelming.
The first class of inductees will number fifteen, but with plans to make this an annual event in place, the list of honorees will grow quickly, especially with input from fans, which will be an integral part of the selection process going forward. The day will kick off at 2:30 at the Raceway, with a meet and greet, and interview sessions, with antique racecars, memorabilia, and photo albums on the midway. A chicken barbeque will be provided to inductees, their families, and the Legends of Woodhull.
The induction ceremony will be held at 5:00. The night will be capped off with a full card of events for Woodhull's regular classes, along with the always exciting Patriot Sprint Tour. The action is sponsored by long time marketing partner and supporter of Woodhull Raceway, Swarthout Recycling of Beaver Dams NY, as well as Lamb & Webster and Southern Tier Logistics.
The Inaugural Class of Hall of Fame Inductees is a mix of the facility's pioneers. The first owners/promotors, long time officials, and legendary drivers and car owners will be honored.
The fifteen inductees for 2018 are: George Williams, Jim and Alice Williams, Bob Williams, Ronnie Towsley, Earl and Dolly Eccelston, Harold and Shirley Sherwood, Arnie Flint, Bob Paul, Ron Baker, Chuck Kennison, Ken Peoples Sr., Wesley Rogers, Herb Layfield, Don Kio, and Jim Van Pelt.
This project would never have come to fruition without outstanding support from the area business community, heartfelt thanks to: Lamb and Webster, Two Rivers Timber, InstaHeat Wood Pellets, Chilson Wilcox dealerships, Hess Garage, Sutton's Service, Elkland Chevrolet, New Moon Farm Equipment, Leslie Smith of Smith Insurance, Patrick Hoope's Trucking, Van Pelt Auto Collision, H.P.
