Billy VanPelt Wins 358 Modified Main with a Last Lap Pass on Jim Williams Memorial Night at Woodhull Raceway
Woodhull, NY… 158 race cars jammed the Woodhull pits and thousands of fans filled every seat in house as Woodhull Raceway saluted former track owner Jim Williams with one of the largest fireworks displays in the Southern Tier. Although the night’s racing action was cut short due to rain, the fans were on their feet for the finish of the 358 Modified feature event. The VanPelt brothers added another thrilling finish to their dream season as Billy VanPelt used a last lap pass to best older brother Curt VanPelt on Wade’s Building Supply Night. Curt VanPelt wasted no time bolting from his fourth starting position to the lead, as the veteran pilot known as “Captin’ Quick” wrestled the lead away from Steve Hartman Jr. by lap four. As Curt worked to open up a six car length lead over Hartman and Dale Welty, Curt’s little brother Billy was rapidly slicing his way forward from his 18th starting position. Billy had cruised up to fifth by the time Welty motored his way by Hartman for the runner-up spot. While Curt opened up an eight car length lead, Billy quickly powered by Stacy Jackson, then Hartman, and finally by Welty, to put himself in the position to chase down his big brother. A late race caution lined the two nose to tail at the restart and when the race ensued, Billy set out to apply the pressure to Curt. Billy continually maneuvered to the low line in an attempt to muscle Curt out of the groove, but the elder VanPelt held strong all the way until the last lap. Entering turn one, Curt pushed wide off from turn two and that was all the daylight Billy needed to snag the lead and take home the victory. It was yet another one-two finish for Ted White Racing, as Vern Wasson’s bounty on the VanPelt brothers will once again carry over another week. Dale Welty held strong for third, with Hartman bringing home his best finish of 2008 in fourth. Stacy Jackson held back a charging Ron White for fifth. After the Modified feature, Woodhull halted the racing program and put the fireworks in the air in tribute to our nation’s upcoming birthday. Unfortunately, before the racing action could resume, Mother Nature opened up the clouds just as the Crate Sportsman feature got rolling on to the speedway. Woodhull management was forced to cancel the rest of the racing card, as severe storm warning were in effect for the entire area. The remaining features will be made up throughout the month of July, starting with the Mini Stock and Front Wheel Drive classes next Saturday night.
