Billy VanPelt Chalks Up Eighth Win of the Season at Woodhull Raceway

Woodhull, NY.  The CRSA sanctioned 305 Sprint group made their first ever visit to the high banks of Woodhull on Bully Hill Vineyards night.  Twenty-four of the winged warriors joined five of Woodhull's regular divisions to pack the pits with a hefty 145 cars.  The Morgan's Auto Repair Street Stocks took a much deserved one week vacation while the LaBarron Brothers FWD division ran their make-up feature from the August 8th rainout.

Ron White and Mike Bills paced the LJ Kennedy 358 Modified main event to the drop of the green and it was Bills who won the drag race into the lead.  White charged back at Bills, bringing Bills' Starkey Motorsports teammate Dave Dubois with him and it was a wild three-wide battle for the top spot.  After a few laps of thrilling action, White was finally able to wrestle his way to the point.  Last week's hard luck award winner, Al Rudalavage, moved into the top five mix and soon worked his way around Bills and Dubois to challenge White for the lead.   While White worked to fend off Rudalavage, veteran pilot Billy Van Pelt had methodically picked his way from his 11th place starting spot and was now lurking in third.  VanPelt kept his machine stuck to the high side of the speedway and quickly powered his way around the first two to claim the lead.  Caution slowed the field just as VanPelt took the top spot, and while parading under yellow, Rudalavage was snake bitten once again as he was forced to report pit side with a flat left front tire.  At the restart, Van Pelt bolted out to a commanding lead as Bills and White gave chase.  The man on the move at this time however, was Steve Hartman Jr. who had made his way from deep in the field and was now riding in fourth.  Bills' good run came to disappointing end as he spun high off the top of turn three, handing the runner-up spot to White.  Billy's brother, Curt VanPelt, was also now in the top five, battling with Dale Welty for the fourth position.  Billy's machine proved to strong for the competition, opening up as much as a near half-track lead before racking up his eighth win of the 2009 season.  Hartman capped off his impressive drive by slipping past White on the last lap to take second, putting White third, with Curt VanPelt edging out Welty for fourth.

Dave Miller darted to an early lead in the NAPA 360 Late Model division and quickly checked out on the field.  Miller was encountering lap traffic by lap five while Mikey Wonderling and Greg Young battled with Bob Buono for the next three positions.  Caution flags kept Miller from getting too far away, as Buono slid by Wonderling to take the second position.  Steve Watson was on the move, passing Young and Wonderling to work his way into third.  On another ensuing restart, Watson drove around Buono and set sail for Miller's rear bumper.  Meanwhile, Jeremy Wonderling had cracked the top five, passing Waters and was running door to door with brother Mikey.  There was a brief, tense moment for Miller as a lap car spun directly in front of the race leader.  Miller did a masterful job avoiding the spinner, but the move allowed Watson to draw within a few car lengths of Miller's deck lid.  This would be as close as anyone would get however, as Miller sailed off with a flag-to-flag victory.  As Miller was driving under the double checkers, Buono and Watson battled door to door for the runner up spot.  Watson's breathtaking run saw its end in the middle of turns three and four, as he drifted too high and spun off the top of the banking, handing Buono second.  Watson's misfortune put Jeremy Wonderling across the line in third, with John Waters rallying to fourth.  Mikey Wonderling held tight for fifth.

Donnie Lawson drew pole position for the S&W Awards Crate Sportsman division and his good fortune spelled trouble for the remainder of the 24 car field.  Lawson took off at the drop of the green and never looked back, picking up his third feature win of the season.  Bob Johnson put together the best drive of his career, motoring through the field and across the stripe with an impressive second place showing.  Mike Buchanan hung around in the top five all night and brought home third place honors.  Larry Keegan had another solid run in forth, with Nick Galayda giving his best effort of the season in fifth.

Ted Morseman Jr. turned up the heat on point leader Ed Mills, charging from the back of the pack to pick up his sixth victory of the year in the Signs Plus Mini Stocks.  Mills stayed glued to Morseman's deck lid to take home second, with Morseman's cousin and teammate Brandon Morseman picking up third.  Last week's winner Ron Dailey Jr. bested Brian Grant for fourth.

Joe Birdsall picked up the win in the make-up event for the LaBarron Brothers FWD division over the three team cars of Gary Baker, Ron Hill and Mark Schenck.  Hill bounced back to win the regularly scheduled feature, with Cody Baker having his best run of the year in second.  Baker's teammate Jamie Freeman grabbed third over Hill's teammate, Gary Baker.

The CRSA 305 Sprint feature was won by 15 year-old Dylan Swiernik, with Billy Vaninwegen and Jeremy Quick closely in tow.

Next week, all six regular divisions will see action, with the 360 Late Models and the Street Stocks scheduled to run their "Race of Champions" events on Maple City Dodge night.
