Tony Foth Claims Street Stock Special at Woodhull Raceway Billy VanPelt Victorious on Curt VanPelt/Lin Hough Tribute Night
Woodhull, NY… The Morgan’s Auto Repair Street Stocks took center stage on the track, but the evening belonged to former Mr. DIRT champions Curt VanPelt and Lin Hough, as Woodhull Raceway paid tribute to two of its living legends on RLB Trucking and Lamb & Webster night. It was a 144 car salute for VanPelt and Hough, who were presented with awards honoring their career achievements by a duo of former track owners, Alice Williams and Scott Drake, along with current owner/promoter Vern Wasson. Kenny Peoples Sr. and Ray Bliss paraded the LJ Kennedy Trucking 358 Modifieds to the green for their 25 lap feature event. Bliss bolted to an early lead, but it wasn’t long before Billy VanPelt moved up from his 4th place starting spot to challenge for the lead. A caution on lap two put Billy on Bliss’ right skid rail for the ensuing restart. VanPelt won the drag race as the race resumed, and set out to build a commanding lead. By the time VanPelt encountered lap traffic, he was enjoying an eight car length cushion over Bliss, who had opened up some distance between himself and third place runner, Ron White. Caution flew again as Vern Wasson slammed hard in to the front stretch wall, which once again bunched the pack up. VanPelt’s brother and teammate, Curt VanPelt, had slowly been picking his way to the front and now had the leaders in his sights, motoring from his 18th starting spot all the way to 7th. After the restart, Billy once again opened a sizeable lead, with Curt charging hard around the outside, picking off a car a lap. As the leaders once again encountered lap traffic, Curt began to put the pressure on Ray Bliss for second position. Billy continued to slice his way through to the checkers, picking up his third feature win of the season. Brother Curt topped off his special night by pulling off the pass on Bliss for second, giving Ted White Racing another Saturday night sweep. Bliss held off a strong drive by Ron White for third, with Mike Jackson rounding out the top five. The Morgan’s Auto Repair Street Stocks once again lived up to their billing as the “wildest Street Stocks in the east”, as their 30 lap special event was filled with two and three wide action each and every lap. Early front-runners Josh Nobriga and Cliff Moss had their bid for the win canceled by flat right rear tires. Rod Mullen took control of the pace by mid-race, with rookie Brett Marlatt close behind. Meanwhile, Tony Foth was running a smooth, steady race keeping his #16 machine solidly in third, lap after lap. While the top three clicked off the laps nose to tail, the fans were treated to a feverous three-wide battle for fourth between Todd Burgess, Brian Knowles and Zack Sutton. Veteran Jeff Smith even took a few shots at the very low side to make it four wide, which had the crowd on its feet. With just three laps to go, Mullen swung wide out of turn two and dropped the tires of his #3 machine over the backstretch. Marlatt saw the opportunity to seize the lead and maneuvered under Mullen. As Mullen attempted to re-enter the speedway, he and Marlatt made significant contact, which carried all the way into turns three and four. The contact spun Mullen to the infield and caused a right rear flat for Marlatt. Foth’s steady strategy paid off, as he inherited the lead, while Brian Knowles darted up to the second spot. Knowles made a couple of charges at Foth, but Tony held his line and picked up his first win of the 2008 season. Knowles brought home a close second, followed by Todd Burgess, who edged out Zack Sutton for third. Jared Hill made a late race pass on Smith to collect fifth. Pole sitter Donnie Lawson took off and never looked back in the S&W Awards Crate Sportsman division. The former 358 Modified pilot lead every lap and won in dominating fashion. Youngster Casey Pavlick put on his best drive of the season by crossing the stripe in second. Nate Delong put together a solid run by finishing third over defending co-champion Bill Brewer. Veteran Dave Yehl locked down the top five. Point leader Glenn Whritenour pulled off a last lap pass of leader Jeremy Wonderling to claim his third victory of the year. Wonderling appeared to have the car to beat early in the race, but had to settle for the runner-up position. Bob Buono continued his string of steady runs by besting John Waters for third. Bruce Miller held off Mike Smith for the fifth position. The Signs Plus Mini Stocks put on a thrilling finish as it was a three wide photo finish at the line. Brian Grant Sr. took the white flag leading by the narrowest of margins over Rich Sharpsteen II. Exiting turn four, Grant drifted high as Sharpsteen slid up to the middle of the track. As the two made contact, Ed Mills seized the opportunity to dive his Mustang to the bottom of the speedway and muscled his way from third to snag the win by a bumper. Grant edged Sharpsteen for second, but the three cars crashed violently in to the front stretch wall after the finish line. Although Mills was slightly shaken up, he was able to enjoy his win in victory lane while his car sat behind the Woodhull wrecker. Jason Ketrow bested Tom Kleintop for fourth. Ron Hill picked up his first feature win in ’08 in the LaBarron Brothers Front Wheel Drive division. Carl LeBarron finished second in his first night back to the speedway since his rollover off turn three. Gary Baker II, Ron Daily Jr. and Tom McGlynn filled out the top five positions.
