KEVIN CHILSON MAKES IT THREE DIFFERENT 358 MODIFIED WINNERS IN AS MANY WEEKS AT WOODHULL.

Costley wins first ever in Crate Sportsman.  Whritenour, Morseman, Knowles, Schenck and Hill all nail down multiple feature event wins.

(Woodhull, NY)  For over half of the 2008 racing season at the Woodhull Raceway it appeared as though Curt and Bill VanPetlt would win every feature that was staged.  However, their dominating performances came to a hault three weeks ago as Steve Hartman Jr. was able to stop the assault.  Last week it was journeyman driver Dan Vauter that had the brothers VanPelt number with a dominating performance.  When the twenty-four car starting field rolled out of the pit area for the regular 25 lap feature event it appeared as though the powerful Ted White Racing team mates would have it easy as both were starting well within the top five rows.  An early race incident sent Curt V. sailing off the top of turn four and to the rear of the field.  Later in the race the oldest of the two racing brothers exited the event with mechanical problems and with that a big hit in the 2008 point standings.  With Billy V. at the head of the class on a mid race restart, outside front row starter, Kevin Chilson was able to put a move on Billy to take away the top spot.  With half the race still to go VanPelt put on a relentless assault to try and retake the lead, but each time Chilson was able to hold him at bay.  A late race caution all but put any lap traffic out of the question so it came down to a Chilson, VanPelt slug fest.  With the laps winding down Chilson was able to open up some daylight between himself and the rest of the field as Ray Bliss Jr. was putting pressure on VanPelt for second.  Zeke the Streak was able to get by Billy V. and with two laps to go set sail on the high flying Chilson.  Bliss was able to get to the rear bumper of Chilson as the double checkered flags waved and for the third time in as many weeks Woodhull had seen a new face in victory lane.  For the veteran competitor, Kevin Chilson it had been a five year dry spell as his only win in the 358 Modified Division came in his rookie season.  Bliss had another strong performance for second, VanPelt did hold on for third and lengthened his point lead over brother Curt.  Dale Welty was rock solid in taking fourth at the finish and Dylan Dewert piloting the Mark Kline #41 rounded the top five.  Dave Dubois led the charge of the next group of five across the line followed by Don Lawson, Stacy Jackson, Goggles Piasano and Ray Dunn.  Opening night qualifying heat events went to Kenny Peoples Sr. in his prototype Crate Spec powered machine, Kevin Chilson and Dylan Dewert.  Bryan Terwilliger won the consolation event.

A.J. Costley has flirted with victory numerous times during the past two seasons in the Crate Sportsman Division.  He has had multiple top five finishes, had led numerous features but was never able to close the deal.  That all changed in a big way last week as Costley was able to get to the lead and cruise to his first ever feature win in any class at Woodhull.  Having started his career in the Mini Stock class he graduated to the Crate Sportsman last year and has been able to quickly make the adjustment.  With his dominating performance he now adds his name to a long list of new winners in the second year Crate Sportsman Division at Woodhull.  Veteran driver, Larry Keegan was able to break clear of traffic and closed on Costley in the last few laps, however when the checkered dropped it was all A.J. Costley as he stood proudly in victory lane.  Current high point man, Donnie Lawson started eighteenth on the grid and rode the high line to a third place finish chased there by Billy VanEtten and Kevin McPherson.  Another young gun in Kreg Crooker finished sixth followed by Casey Pavlick, Scott Brown, Chris Silvers as Bill Shea rounded the top ten.  Heat wins went to Ray Smith, Mike Jackson and Bill Brewer with Charlie Winchell taking the consolation event.

Glen Whritenour was able to get to the point early in the 360 Late model feature and cruised to his fifth win of 08.  Whritenour, who decided to stay at Woodhull versus a tour stop for the BRP Can AM series used the night to open up even more daylight between himself and the rest of the field as the 2008 point season rapidly comes to a close.  For the veteran Jasper pilot it was a tune up for the upcoming NAPA Race Of Champion event which will be held on August 30.  Rookie sensation, Jeredd Dennis had his best ever finish in the 360 Late Model Division as he was able to keep Whritenour within striking distance and came home with a well deserved runner-up finish.  Sparky Hills continues to prove that isn’t just a young mans game as the ageless veteran competitor put on a rock solid performance for third followed by Mike Smith and Fred Amann.  Mick Seeley bounced back after a hard crash last week to finish sixth followed by Bob Lubberts, Wally Wade, Jay McConnell and Jay McConnell II.  Whritenour picked up the lone heat win.

Brian Knowles just keeps rolling along in Street Stock action as he was able to keep all others in his rear view mirror in picking up feature win number 6 on the season and lengthening his point lead. Cliff Moss was able to keep “Pork Chop” within striking distance, however Knowles was to much t handle and went on to the win.  Brett Marlatt was able to come from dead last in another brilliant performance to claim third and with that strengthened his strangle hold on the rookie title.  Tony Foth had a solid run for fourth as Hot Rod Mullen rounded the top five.  Jared Hill came home sixth as he was followed by Todd Burgess, Jeff Smith, Butch Dibble and Kurt Stebbins.  Earlier night heats were won by Foth, Russ Morseman III and Mullen.

Like Brian Knowles before him, Teddy Morseman Jr. followed suite in winning yet another Mini Stock feature event as he once again drove through the field like a hot knife thru butter.  Morseman swept the night as he won the held over  feature from last week.  It was win number 9 for Morseman on the year in a class that hasn’t seen his type of dominance since the hay days of Tom Stewart.  Chris McCann led early , but finally surrendered the lead to Morseman and settled for a fine second place finish.  He was followed by Brian Grant Sr., Eddie Mills, Mike Smith, Chris Woodard, Jason Ketrow, Brandon Morseman, Randy Bauman and Marty Vanderhouf.   Heat wins were claimed by  Teddy Morseman, Mike Smith and Eddie Mills.

Last but certainly not least the Front Wheel Drive Class took on the high banks of Woodhull and for the fourth time in 2008 Ron Hill was able to claim the feature even twin.  For Hill it looked to be an early night as he suffered severe damage in the make-up feature run at the start of the night.  However, the crew was able to repair and car and Hill drove a perfect race to claim the win.  Current high point man and last years champion, Ron Daily Jr. had another good point night as he finished second in the twenty lap feature event chased there by his closest point challenger, Gary Baker II.  Randy Smith was fourth followed by Cody Baker, Jamie Freeman, Tom McGlynn, Brian Grant Jr., Mark Schenck who won the held over feature as Mat Prescott rounded the top ten.  Heat events were won by Hill, Baker II and Smith.

Next Saturday it’s the Annual Legends of Woodhull Reunion and Spaulding foundation Night all sponsored by Austin Construction of Campbell, NY.
