Steve Hartman Jr. Spoils VanPelt Brothers '08 Shutout at Woodhull Raceway,

Kevin McPherson Picks up First Career Win in Crate Sportsman

WOODHULL, NY.            Mullen Carpets and S&W Awards & Photos sponsored what would quickly become one of the most memorable evenings so far in the 2008 season.  The high powered Super Late Models attacked the high banks, with past Late Model Reunion winner Todd Andrews taking home the victory.  160 cars jammed the Woodhull pits and a capacity crowd was treated with some great racing, as the mighty VanPelts were finally defeated and a first time winner graced victory lane in the Crate Sportsman division.

The 2008 season has been a demonstration of dominance by the Ted White Racing teammates of Curt and Billy VanPelt.  One brother of the other has taken home victory in every LJ Kennedy Trucking 358 Modified feature this season.  That is, until Saturday night.  Kevin Chilson and Greg Galligan paced the field to the drop of the green, with Galligan bolting to the early lead.  By lap three, fourth place starter Steve Hartman Jr. motored his Terry Brewer owned #15 around the outside of Galligan to take command.  Ray Dann was having a strong run, chasing down Hartman and Galligan from the 3rd position.  On the move, however, was Billy VanPelt, who moved quickly from his 11th place starting spot and was chasing down Bryan Terwilliger and Stacy Jackson, who were running fourth and fifth.  After disposing of Jackson, VanPelt continued on the move, as he passed both Jackson and Dann in one corner to jump to third.  As Hartman began to open up a five car length lead, VanPelt pulled alongside of Galligan for the runner-up spot, and would soon take the position.  Billy soon pulled within two car lengths of Hartman's rear spoiler, as the two entered heavy lap traffic.  VanPelt kept applying the pressure on the leader, constantly showing a nose to the bottom side at every turn.  Hartman was up to the challenge, however, as he aggressively maneuvered his way through the lap traffic, often diving from high to low in order to pick his way through.  While this battle had everyone's attention, Curt VanPelt had quietly worked his way in to the third position.  Numerous times VanPelt pulled even with Hartman, only to have Hartman run by him off the exit of the corners.  As the crowd rose to its feet on the white flag lap, Hartman led VanPelt by a mere two car lengths.  As the two entered the final set of turns, Hartman wheeled his machine to the high side of the speedway and crossed the line victorious to the cheers of his hometown crowd.  Billy VanPelt led his brother Curt across the line for 2nd, with Bryan Terwilliger putting together another strong run in fourth.  Stacy Jackson hung tight for fifth.

S&W Awards Crate Sportsman rookie Kevin McPherson led the group of 24 cars to the green and quickly darted to the point.  2007 co-champion Bill Brewer quickly moved to the second spot and began pressuring the rookie, who moved in to the Crate Sportsman class straight from racing go-karts.  McPherson held a solid line and each time he began to build a slight lead over Brewer, a caution would bunch the field back together.  Bill VanEtten also gave chase early, while fighting off veteran Larry Keegan for third.  A red flag halted the race momentarily, when AJ Costley and Kenny Peoples Jr. made hard contact in the middle of the backstretch.  As racing resumed, McPherson once again opened up a three car length lead over Brewer, as Keegan muscled his way along side Brewer for second.  Keegan couldn't quite pull off the pass and soon found himself fighting off Donnie Lawson as Brewer once again worked to get position on McPherson.  However, the rookie stayed cool and cruised to his first ever victory in a stock car as Brewer had to settle for second.  Keegan held off Lawson for third as Chris Silvers had his best run of the season, coming home fifth.

In the NAPA 360 Late Models, Bruce Miller picked up his second win of the season, edging out sibling Dave Miller at the line.  It was another feature event marred by numerous cautions as John Waters led early and held tough for third.  Defending track champion Wayne Robertson crossed the stripe in fourth and BRP Can-Am series regular Larry Knowles rounded out the top five.

The Morgan's Auto Repair Street Stock feature saw rookie Brett Marlatt doing battle with point leader Brian Knowles early in the feature go.  While running second, Knowles was knocked from contention by a wayward lap car, giving the runner-up spot to Marlatt's teammate, Cliff Moss.  The two took the checkers nose to tail, giving Marlatt his third win of the season.  Lavern Knickerbocker put together his best run of 2008 by finishing third.  Jeff Smith bounced back from a blown motor the week before to finish fourth.  Rod Mullen raced his way to fifth, despite an early race altercation which sent him to the rear of the field.

Brian grant Sr. broke Ted Morseman Jr.'s stranglehold of the Signs Plus Mini Stock division, picking up his first win of the year.  Chris McCann held off the charging Morseman, who started 18th, to earn second place honors.  Rookie Aaron Bartas bested Tracy Dunn for fourth.

Ron Hill grabbed win number three by an impressive margin as defending champion Ron Daily Jr. motored home second.  Matt Prescott had his best run of the season, picking up third over Steve Gee and Jacob Clarke.

Next week the Tobias SpeedSTRs attack the high banks, with expected appearances by Ray Evernham and Erin Crocker.
