Wonderling Wins with a Last Lap Pass,
Woodhull,NY… Once again, Woodhull Raceway dodged the wrath of Mother Nature as a brief shower delayed the action on the high banks. After the delay, the Woodhull faithful were treated to some fast action on Beam Mack and E&B Recreational Sports night. The S&W Crate Sportsman class took center stage as they ran their second extra-distance race of the 2008 season. Donnie Knowles bolted to the early lead in the Crate Sportsman feature, with rookie Scott Brown closely in tow. While Brown worked on running down Knowles for the lead, Wesley Campbell had his hands full trying to hold back the #12 of Ray Smith and 2007 co-champion Bill Brewer for third. An early race caution bunched the entire pack and Knowles had to hustle his way back in to the lead on the restart, but Brown was hot on his rear bumper. Brown continued to work the very bottom line under Knowles, digging low for the bite he needed to get a run for the top spot. Meanwhile, Ray Smith continued to push his way forward, holding off advances from both Brewer and multi-feature winner Donnie Lawson. Persistence paid off as Brown finally made the low line work and grabbed the lead away from Knowles. A late race caution stacked the field single file, but Brown set sail on the restart. While Brown opened up a sizeable lead, Smith managed to muscle his way past Knowles for the runner-up position. Brewer also made the slide past Knowles and was putting the pressure on Smith for third. Brown’s sizeable lead was cut down to a mere three car lengths as the leaders entered lap traffic, with just a few laps remaining. Smith was able to drive right up to Brown’s rear bumper, but couldn’t get the run he needed to overtake Brown at the checkers. Brewer managed to hold off early leader Knowles for third, with former 358 Modified pilot Mike Jackson squeezing by Lawson for fifth. The LJ Kennedy 358 Modified feature saw Dave Dubois jump to the lead in the beginning of their main event. Ryan Gordner gave chase early, as the VanPelt brothers both worked to find racing room in the middle of the pack. Don Silvernail kept the pressure on Dubois, and Ray Bliss Jr. ran closely in third. Dubois began to open up a noticeable lead and it looked as the VanPelt stronghold may be broken. However, a caution flag negated Dubois’ lead and placed Curt VanPelt firmly in the top five. Bryan Terwillger, driving the #88 Herb Wright machine, took his mount to the extreme high side of the speedway and quickly snagged the third position. Curt kept his Ted White Racing machine to the low side of the track and soon worked his way under Terwilliger and Bliss to take over the runner-up position. Caution on the speedway bunched the field up and on the ensuing restart, Curt VanPelt switched lines to the high side and motored around Dubois for the lead. VanPelt quickly opened up a five car length lead as Terwilliger looked for a clean run around Dubois for second. As the leaders encountered heavy lap traffic, Terwilliger finally pulled off the pass for second, as VanPelt continued to open up his lead. The handling continued to go away on the Dubois machine, as Bliss and Stacy Jackson both motored by in the closing laps. VanPelt held strong for the win, as Terwilliger crossed ahead of Bliss for second. Jackson edged out a charging Kevin Chilson for fourth, as Billy VanPelt, who had been caught up in two separate cautions, narrowly missed a top five finish. Ageless veteran Sparky Hills led NAPA 360 Late Model feature in the early laps, but it wouldn’t take long as point leader Glenn Whritenour soon took command of the race. As Whritenour paced the field out in front, Jeremy Wonderling and defending track champion Wayne Robertson both maneuvered their way to the top three. Whritenour planted his machine firmly in the middle of the speedway as Wonderling took to the high side and Robertson to the ditch. The three put on an epic battle, bringing the Woodhull crowd to their feet on numerous occasions. On the final lap, Wonderling made one last effort on the extreme high side of the speedway and made a run off turn four that Whritenour couldn’t defend. As Wonderling took the victory by inches over Whritenour, Robertson crossed the line third to make it a thrilling 1-2-3 finish. John Waters crossed the line in fourth, followed by BRP Can-Am series regular Steve Dixon. The Morgan’s Auto Repair Street Stocks ran two feature events, with Brian Knowles picking up his fifth win of the season in the Jim Williams Memorial make-up feature. The regular main event went to Josh Nobriga, who used a front row starting spot to motor to victory and put an end to his streak of bad luck. Russell Morseman III brought home second, as he continued his string of solid runs in the month of July. Cliff Moss bested Rod Mullen for third, as Jared Hill rounded out the top five. The Signs Plus Mini Stock feature saw Ted Morseman Jr. once again claim victory, as Rich Sharpsteen III couldn’t hold off the advances of the potent #44 machine. Ed Mills brought home third place honors, with Jason Ketrow besting Chris McCann for fourth. Brian Grant Jr. returned to winning form as he gathered the checkers in the LaBarron Brothers Front Wheel Drive Division. Steve Gee gave chase almost the entire race, but could do no better than second. The next three spots were filled by the “B Boys”, with Ron Hills edging out Gary Baker for third and teammate Mark Schenck following in fifth.
