VanPelt, Pavlick, Robertson, Marlatt, Morseman and Hill all Race to Victory at Woodhull Raceway
Woodhull, NY… The pits were flooded with race cars as Vern Wasson’s Woodhull Raceway hosted all six of its regular divisions as well as the visiting Empire Super Sprints and the Mid-State Vintage Stock Car Club on Bully Hill Vineyards and Swarthout Recycling night. Cory Sparks picked up his first ever ESS feature event in their 25-lap A-main and Bob Williams picked up the overall victory in the Mid-State Antique feature. Check the press releases from both organizations for the entire run down. Greg Galligan had his Mopar powered machine on the point for the LJ Kennedy Trucking 358 Modified main event. Bath, NY pilot Dave Dubois sat to Galligan’s outside as the two led the field to the drop of the green. Galligan grabbed the early lead as four-time feature winner Billy VanPelt shot from his 5th place starting spot to the 2nd position in just one lap. Dubois stayed close behind in third while trying to hold back the advances of Ray Bliss, Jr. VanPelt quickly maneuvered his Ted White Racing #2 to the extreme bottom of the speedway and muscled under Galligan in turns three and four. The pair drag raced down the front stretch and entered turn one in a dead heat. However, VanPelt had the prime real estate through the corner, which allowed him to pull Galligan off turn two and claim the lead. Van Pelt then set sail to a seven car length lead as the front pack began encountering lap traffic. As Galligan worked to keep Billy within sight, Bliss motored around Dubois into second. Without any warning signs, Galligan suddenly pulled his car pit side with mechanical issues, handing the runner-up spot to Bliss. Meanwhile, both Chris Clark and Curt VanPelt had quietly wheeled their way into the top five, with Curt having come all the way from his 18th starting position. A late race caution bunched the field and allowed Bliss one last shot at Billy, but VanPelt refused to relinquish the lead and tallied up win number five of the season. Bliss found himself having to hold back a charging Curt VanPelt for second, with Clark bringing home his best run of the season in fourth. Steve Hartman Jr. made it two weeks in a row in the top five by placing fifth. The luck of the draw put young gun Casey Pavlick on the pole for the S&W Awards Crate Sportsman feature. Pavlick used the starting position to his advantage, as he took off early and led the entire race to lock up his first ever Sportsman feature win. Tony Hooker dogged Pavlick early in the race, with Ray Smith close on his heels. Pavlick’s car was flawless, which left Hooker, Smith and point leader Donnie Lawson to battle for second. By midway through the race, Pavlick still enjoyed a five car length cushion as Smith squeezed by Hooker for second. Lawson would soon do the same thing, passing Hooker for third and setting sail for Smith’s back bumper. While Pavlick took the checkers, Smith was able to hold back Lawson for the runner-up spot. Hooker held on for a solid fourth place finish, with Nate Delong rounding out the top five. Wayne Robertson didn’t let starting dead last deter his run to the feature win in the NAPA 360 late Model division. By virtue of being last week’s feature winner, Robertson was forced to start shotgun on the 15 car field, but made his way quickly to the front and was running second by mid-race. Robertson had used the low line to gain his positions, but leader Mikey Wonderling had his machine clung to the ditches of the high banks. Realizing there was no way under Wonderling, Robertson set sail to the high side and motored by to claim his fourth win of 2008. Wonderling held tight for second, with point leader Glenn Whritenour checking in for third. Bob Buono continued his string of solid runs in fourth, with Mike Smith rounding out the top five. Rookie Brett Marlatt drew the pole for the Morgan’s Auto Street Stock main and parlayed it into win number two of the season. Outside front row starter Rod Mullen gave chase the entire 20 laps, but finished right where he started, in second. Marlatt’s teammate Cliff Moss brought home third, with Russell Morseman III besting point leader Brian Knowles for fourth. Ted Morseman Jr. continued his hot streak by winning his 3rd Signs Plus Mini Stock feature in a row. For the second week in a row, Morseman charged all the way from the 18th starting spot to victory lane. The win was Morseman’s 6th of the season. Jason Ketrow bested veteran Ed Mills for second, with Rich Sharpsteen III beating out Mike Smith for fourth. Ron Hill ran away with his second victory of the season in the LeBarron Brothers FWD division. Defending champion Ron Daily, Jr. chalked up a solid second to cut into the point lead of Gary Baker II, who was involved in a large crash in turn two. Randy Smith raced to his best finish of ’08 by taking third. Cody Baker bested Jacob Clarke as the two completed the top five running order. WOODHULL RACEWAY QUICK RESULTS 7/12/08
