VanPelt Brothers Deliver another 1-2 Punch at Woodhull Raceway
Ted Morseman Jr. Doubles up in Mini Stocks

Woodhull, NY…  Clear, blue skies gave Woodhull Raceway and chance to catch up on some racing action as Ted Morseman Jr. took home both the make-up and regularly schedule feature events in the Signs Plus Mini Stock division.  158 cars squeezed into the Woodhull pits on Elkland Moose night as the Mini Stock and FWD divisions made up their Jim Williams Memorial trophy races, along with the regularly scheduled six features.

Marc Benson led the LJ Kennedy Trucking 358 Modified feature to the green flag and jumped out to the early lead.  Soon after the drop of the green, Greg Galligan took command of the race as Benson slipped back to second, just ahead of a charging Frank Dunning.  An early race caution bunched the field up and placed Curt VanPelt in the 5th position, up quickly from his 11th place starting spot.  Benson’s night ended early as a broken rear end brought out another caution which placed last week’s feature winner Billy VanPelt all the way up to 8th from his 18th starting position.  On the ensuing restart, Curt VanPelt motored around Dunning and Roger Williams to grab second.  VanPelt quickly dove to the low side and challenged Galligan for the top spot.  Galligan’s fight was short-lived as Curt stole the lead a lap later.  While Curt was battling for the lead, brother Billy took his machine to the high side of the high banks and continued to motor his way into the top five.  As Curt opened up an eight car length lead, Billy continued his way around the rim of the track and eventually overtook Dunning for the runner-up position.  Meanwhile, Steve Hartman Jr. was charging his way into the top five and was chasing Dunning for third.  Curt soon entered heavy lap traffic which allowed Billy to close in within three car lengths.  Hartman Jr. made quick work of Dunning and moved in on the VanPelts as they still struggled to slice through the lap cars.  Curt then showed the skill which has made him a Woodhull legend, as he diced through the mire of lap cars and opened up another eight car length lead as Billy still fought to get in the clear.  As the laps wound down, Billy finally cleared the lap traffic and made one last run on Curt, only to fall three car lengths short as the finish line.  Hartman Jr. crossed the stripe a solid third, with Dunning hanging on for fourth.  Galligan held off a charging Don Lawson for fifth.

Twenty-nine of the S&W Awards Crate Sportsman checked in Saturday night, which required a consolation event to set the feature field.  Tony Hooker and Frank Kline battled for the lead early, with Joe Dgien closely in tow.  As Kline bolted to the point, Dgien muscled his way by Hooker for the second spot.  Former feature winner Art Goodier quickly flexed his muscles, as he quickly powered around the outside of the speedway and into the third position.  As Dgien dove under Kline and snagged the lead, Goodier also used the low line to take third away from Hooker.  Meanwhile, veteran Larry Keegan was working his way around the high side of the speedway and quickly placed himself in the top five.  Keegan kept the momentum up and soon worked his way to the lead, which shoved Dgien back to second.  Goodier soon wedged his way under Dgien for second and set sail for Keegan’s back bumper.  A caution flag put Keegan and Goodier nose to tail, and Goodier quickly dove back to the low line and powered his way by Keegan for the lead.  That was all the room Goodier would need to set sail for his second feature win of the season.  A charging Bill VanEtten stepped up to challenge Keegan for second, but couldn’t quite make the pass and had to settle for third.  Hooker held tight for fourth.  Possibly the best run of the night was logged in by Casey Pavlick, who started deep in the field, having come form the consolation event, to finish fifth.

Defending track champion Wayne Robertson took command of the NAPA 360 Late Model feature early and never looked back as he tallied up his third feature win in 2008.  Mikey Wonderling pressured Robertson late in the race, but had to settle for second.  Point leader Glenn Whritenour made a late race charge around the outside to finish third.   Larry Knowles ran up front early, but slipped back to fourth, with Mike Smith rounding out the top five.

Zack Sutton took advantage of an outside front row starting position to take his first feature win in ’08.  Sutton felt pressure from the #93 of Jared Hill the entire race, but Hill couldn’t quite pull off the pass as had to settle for second.  Brett Marlatt made a late race dive under Todd Burgess for third, with Rod Mullen motoring his way through the field for fifth.

Ted Morseman Jr. pulled the double in the Signs Plus Mini Stocks, as he won the make-up feature from last week and then powered his way to win the regularly scheduled main event to complete the sweep.

Ron daily, Jr. won the make-up race in the LaBarron Bothers FWD Division.  Gary Baker II won the scheduled main event, with Daily dicing his way from 18th to finish 2nd.
